Unity’s annual golf classic began in 2017. The golf classic is a great way for the community to show their support for the highest level of care provided by Unity for patients and their families. Either by golfing the day of the event or providing sponsorships, those involved are truly making a difference in the lives of those served by Unity.

I am not only on the committee for the event, I also am on the course all day mixing with the golfers. My job is great as it is usually hot, and I get to drive the hospitality cart handing out cold water bottles. It truly is a team effort to host a successful event. Many volunteers are needed to run games on the various holes, registration, assisting with raffle ticket sales and table set ups. Some of the volunteers sign on for a couple of hours and others work the entire event.

Active recruitment for volunteers usually begins in March. Articles are placed in the Unity volunteer newsletter. Personal phone calls are made inviting volunteers to help. E-mails are sent letting the volunteers know of the need. For some volunteers this is the one event they attend during the year. Other volunteers are very active visiting patients and helping in other areas throughout the year.

Proceeds from the event are used to provide hospice and bereavement care to the patients and families in the 13 counties in Northeastern Wisconsin served by Unity. Knowing their volunteering will help to provide this much needed care provides the volunteers and other supporters of the event with a sense of giving back to the community. In the words of Albert Schweitzer, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”
