Intentional Kindness this Winter

February 9, 2021

Kindness is like snow – It beautifies everything it covers.

– Kahlil Gibran

Cold, dark winter days can wear on a person even in the best of times. Intentionally showing yourself kindness can make all the difference. One way to be kind to yourself is to identify ways in which you could care for your mind, body and spirit when you are down. Naming these options ahead of time will give you something to grab onto when you need a boost. What has been helpful for you in the past? What might you be willing to try? Here are some ideas to get you started.

Mind

  • Set small realistic goals for an indoor project
  • Read a book
  • Work on a puzzle
  • Sign up for a virtual class or event
  • Begin a daily gratitude journal

Body

  • Exercise – go snowshoeing, skiing, or take a winter walk. Pace yourself and be safe.
  • Make a grocery shopping list with healthy food or cook a healthy meal
  • Drink water
  • Take a warm bath or shower
  • Enjoy a cup of tea, coffee, or hot cocoa

Spirit

  • Share memories and hopes with someone you trust
  • Collect pictures and create a scrapbook or memory box
  • Get involved in something meaningful such as donating or volunteering
  • Schedule a regular phone call with a friend or family member
  • Reflect and write about what is important to you

Remember – it is the little things that can make a big difference.
