2020 – What a Year

As we near the holiday season and 2020 draws to a close, let us reflect on what we know to be true. This year has been hard. Period. For many, change, frustration, loss and grief are this year’s themes. Perhaps this year, more than ever, it is important to find a place to rest, to be understood, and to find peace and light.

Unity’s 6th Annual Honor A Life Gathering – Facebook Live

This year as people and families grieving a death are experiencing the holiday season, Unity recognizes the importance of providing a space in time to gather. For the past five years, Unity has hosted the Honor a Life Gathering as a way to remember loved ones and provide support. To ensure the safety of all, Unity’s 6th Annual Honor A Life Gathering will be held on Tuesday, December 15 through Facebook Live.

2020 Honor a Life Keepsake Ornament

A consistent and important part of this Gathering has been the Honor A Life Keepsake Ornament. Art provides the opportunity to create a narrative and see our stories reflected in images. Local artist Carlie Petersen, set out to create Unity’s 2020 Honor A Life Ornament to invoke feelings of “warmth and a renewed sense of hope.” As you reflect on this this scene – the hand holding the lantern, the trees, the star, and the path – consider what is stirred up in you.

Light in Darkness

Carlie created a quiet winter scene filled with warmth and bright colors, urging us to feel the promise of light. The hand gently, yet firmly, holds the lantern high. In a time of darkness, holding hope can be a courageous choice. Perhaps you find yourself holding the lantern and are weary from its weight. When you can’t hold or find the light – look to the power of your community. May there be others to carry the light for you. Carlie reminds us that “The light is with you, in your hands and will light up the dark places.”
