As a proud partner of We Honor Veterans, a collaboration of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs, Unity is committed to offering Respecting Valor, specialized care for veterans facing serious illness or the end-of-life.

With our commitment to bring the most meaningful and sensitive end-of-life journey possible to our community, we offer Veteran-centered care to address the unique set of needs Veterans and their family members bring – physically, emotionally and spiritually.
- Personalized Plan of Care – Goals of care are based on your branch and era of military service, domestic or international service, service-related illnesses/conditions, past experiences.
- Assistance with Unresolved Military Experience – Our specially trained psychosocial staff assist with unresolved issues associated with the stresses of military service, PTSD, depression and even suicidal thoughts. Veteran to Veteran Volunteer Companionship - Recognizing that many Veterans feel only another Veteran can fully relate to their experiences, Unity partners Veteran volunteers with patients who have served in the military to share their stories, fostering a sense of fellowship, life closure and peace.
- Veteran Pinning Ceremony – A personalized pinning ceremony is offered to veteran patients wherever they reside, including a private home, assisted living facility, and nursing home.
- Patriotic Lap Blankets – Handcrafted by a Unity Volunteer, a red,white and blue blanket is gifted to each Veteran patient.
- Jack and Engrid Meng Hospice Residence – Patients residing at the Meng Residence are honored with a patriotic floral arrangement displayed outside their room. At time of death, family and friends are invited to pay their respects, along with Unity staff, by attending a Walk of Honor while the glow of a Veteran Memorial candle keeps the memory of their loved one alive.
- Resource Connection – Unity’s collaboration with area Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, American Legion posts, County Veteran Service Officers, and Veteran Administration agencies connects families with the resourced needed for Veteran benefits, military honor funerals, burial assistance, honor flight applications, and more.
- Full Range of Grief Support – Unity’s Grief Counselors support Veterans’ loved ones through one-on-one support, grief groups, and memorial services with special Veteran honor and recognition.
- Sgt. David L. Rasmussen Veterans Fund – Supports Veterans who are receiving care from Unity and are in need of financial assistance to cover the costs of basic needs.
Upon admission to Unity Supportive Care Management program or Hospice Care program, you will be asked if you served in the armed forces. Your plan of care will be tailored to your military service upon request.

Veteran volunteers have the unique ability to relate and connect with Veteran patients. Their common language and experiences often lead to a strong relational bond. Unity’s Veteran-to-Veteran Program partners Veteran volunteers with Unity patients who have served in the military. The camaraderie created between Veterans has proven to be supportive for all involved, bringing great peace and closure to many.
Unity’s Sgt. David L. Rasmussen Veterans Fund supports Veterans who are receiving care from Unity and are in need of financial assistance to cover the costs of basic needs. Veterans who have exhausted assistance through other community resources may submit an application to receive financial assistance once admitted to Unity Supportive Care Management or Hospice Care programs.
